Hollywood rolls out the red carpets
This month saw the first of the long-awaited annual awards bashes with the 71st Golden Globes being held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, where they have been held annually since 1961.
This more low key awards ceremony has always been regarded as the warm-up, supporting act to the more illustrious Academy Awards and gives the entertainment industry a flavour of who’s in the running for the top gongs come March time.
It was no surprise to see “12 Years a Slave” pick up a prize, alongside the popular “American Hustle” which will be the two movies going head to head for an Oscar no doubt. Some lesser know productions such as Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity was another recipient of a globe, as was TV comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine which picked up two awards, regardless of having some pretty awful viewing figures.
When it came to the acting awards, there was a mixed bag of seasoned actors alongside some surprising recipients including Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey, Amy Adams, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Jared Leto all receiving an award.
So what can we assume from the Globes when it comes to the Oscars? Not a great deal as the votes had already been submitted and closed prior to the Golden Globes but for sure, they’ll be the usual glitz, glamour, over the top speeches and no doubt a few car crash moments.

The tennis season is back with a bang!
Things are really hotting up Down Under with the Australian Open well under way and into the second week. Temperatures have been sizzling and so has some of the tennis!
Already we’ve seen both the top seeds drop out in the women’s and the men’s singles draw. A resurgent and impressively aggressive Ana Ivanovic took the Serena Williams game apart in what was one of the most impressive displays of tennis we have seen from her in over five years. From the first point, she attacked the Williams serve and showed just how to deal with the dominant American.
Even after losing the first set, where in the past she could easily have withdrawn into herself, Ivanovic came out swinging and won the next two sets with some breathtaking groundstrokes and passing shots. It was a great match to watch.
Last night saw another shocker with defending champion Novak Djokovic tasting defeat in Melbourne for the first time in three years at the hands of an in-form and confident looking Stan Wawrinka. Bringing his form from last season straight into Australia, Wawrinka went toe-to-toe with the dominant Serb and came out eventual winner in a gruelling five set thriller to win 2-6 6-4 6-2 3-6 9-7 and set up a semi-final match against Tomas Berdych. With this form, Wawrinka has to go into that one as favourite.
Andy Murray returns to tennis after back surgery
So how is the UK’s Wimbledon champion doing? Well, after a stop start return to the game after a four month absence to get essential back surgery, Andy looks to be finding his form again.
Having had a few rocky moments, he has also had some periods of inspired form and with a quarter final match against Roger Federer to come tonight, there’s a lot at stake with the eventual winner playing either Rafa Nadal or Grigor Dimitrov in the semis.
