The heat is on for our nation’s sports stars

Brazil World Cup 2014

Finally, the UK is bathed is glorious sunshine to go with the sporting events that are happening up and down the country, along with the greatest football show on earth over in Brazil.

Sadly, our national football team didn’t light up the stadiums of Manaus or Sao Paulo during the 2014 World Cup. England were out-thought and out-muscled by Italy and were frankly humiliated by an energised and motivated Uruguay. Two games. Two defeats.

Although these kind of results were to be expected of our young and inexperienced team, it’s still disappointing to know that our final game against Costa Rica tomorrow is purely academic. Expect major changes to the line ups as the fringe players finally get their chance to possibly make amends and get a result against the Costa Rican’s who have been one of the tournament’s surprise packages. The match kicks off at 5pm GMT and is showing live on ITV.

Over to SW19 to support our Wimbledon champion

Thankfully this year’s Wimbledon championships will have a whole new feel to them. The pressure is off as the nation has the rare luxury of enjoying the tournament with the defending champion being a Brit.

In keeping with tradition, Any Murray will be the first player to walk out onto the hallowed fresh turf of centre court at SW19 and will open his title defence against rank outsider David Goffin, with coverage of the entire tournament being aired on the BBC TV stations and online.

Murray, seeded 3 this year, has been given a relatively kind draw. No doubt he’ll be pleased to see long time nemesis Rafael Nadal on the other side of the drawer as the second seed, with top seed Novak Djokovic being a potential semi-final opponent; a player he has a decent record against with of course, the straights sets victory of last year still fresh in the memory.

Murray has no room for relaxation however, with a potential fourth round tie against Fabio Fognini on the horizon. The Italian beat Murray in their recent Davis Cup ties which dumped Great Britain out of the tournament in emphatic style. Win that and he could also face the tough prospect of the energetic Spanish brawler David Ferrer who on his day, can beat anyone when he’s in the mood.

Unlike the England football team, we expect our man to stay in the tournament until the latter stages so you can keep up with Andy’s progress right across the BBC on Freeview, Freesat and Sky.

Don’t forget the cricket season has swung into action!

With all the talk of football and tennis, it’s easy to forget that the traditional season of summer cricket is now well under way as well. Never too far away from controversy, England are currently in the throws of their test series against Sri Lanka.

With England drawing the first test, the series is yet to come to life with the second test taking place at Headingly. So far, the stands have looked at little thin with crowd attendances being on the lower than expected side however; with the eyes of the world on other sporting events, this might set the tone for the coming days until the World Cup concludes.

But all cricket fans who can’t make it to the grounds can follow the matches live on Sky Sports 2 using Sky TV and Sky Go.

Sky has so much more TV entertainment to offer!

Don’t forget that Sky isn’t just about getting access to the best in sporting events.

After investing huge sums into producing original programming, BSkyB now boasts a great line up of high quality, exclusive television series that have the critics purring and the mainstream terrestrial stations quivering.

In recent months, they have launched new shows including Mr. Sloane, Penny Dreadful, 24: Live Another Day, True Blood, Criminal Minds and Hannibal; all exclusive to Sky and are highly unlikely to ever air on terrestrial television networks. Also don’t forget that Game of Thrones airs on Sky along with other favourites such as Modern Family, The Simpsons and About a Boy.
