A new year and a new season is upon us and that can mean only one thing – a whole batch of brand new and returning TV shows, plus movies and so much more coming to our screens. 2017 is undoubtedly going to be a blockbuster year with some impressive, new high-production shows waiting in the wings, plus the return of some cult classics and old favourites.
So here’s our rundown of just some of the great entertainment to look out for in 2017:
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
From 1 January, 2017 – Sky Cinema
In the follow-up to 2013’s Man of Steel, Ben Affleck stars in the first live-action movie to feature both Batman and Superman on the same stage, as well as the first live-action portrayal of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg. Like the 1978 classic, Lex Luthor is the main villain aiming to defeat Superman by manipulating Batman into a preemptive battle with the caped crusader.
Fortitude (Season 2)
26 January, 2017 at 10:00 pm – Sky Atlantic
Sofie Gråbøl and Richard Dormer return for a second season of the Bafta-winning arctic crime saga in what is quickly becoming a cult classic amongst fans. A fresh murder rocks the remote Arctic community and plunges it into turmoil yet again. This season sees the cast joined by Dennis Quiad plus Parminder Nagra, Michelle Fairley, Robert Sheehan and Ken Stott. Let’s hope this one’s a weird and as unmissable as the first outing.
24: Legacy
14 February 2017 at 9:00 pm – Sky Atlantic
The famous ticking clock is back for a reboot, this time without mainstay Kiefer Sutherland, now as series executive producer. Corey Hawkins stars as war hero Eric Carter, taking over the baton where agent Jack Bauer left off in the usual race against time to stop a large-scale terror attack on Washington DC.
The scene is initially set in Yemen, where an elite squad of U.S. Army Rangers led by Sgt Carter, assassinate terrorist leader Sheik Ibrahim Bin-Khalid. As a consequence, Bin-Khalid’s followers declare a fatwah against Carter, his squad and their families, forcing them into federal witness protection.
Guerilla
April (TBC) – Sky Atlantic
Sky’s new six-part thriller boasts an all-star cast including Rory Kinnear, Daniel Mays, Babou Ceesay and Zawe Ashton in this original political drama, set against the backdrop of one of the most politically explosive times in U.K. history.
Babou Ceesay plays political activist Marcus, alongside on screen partner Jas (Freida Pinto) who both quickly transform into hardened militants at war with a Special Branch unit dedicated to crushing all forms of black activism. Essentially a love story, it tells the story of a couple whose relationship is tested when they liberate a political prisoner and form a radical underground cell in 1970’s London.
Game of Thrones (Season 7)
April (TBC) – Sky Atlantic
The most Emmy award winning drama ever returns for its highly anticipated penultimate series as we learn what happens when Daenerys Targaryen’s army hit landfall in Westeros to faces Cersei Lannister. Meanwhile, new King of the North John Snow awaits the inevitable attack by the fearsome White Walkers, hoping they won’t breach the wall.
With countless questions on our lips, will this season of Game of Thrones finally answer them? We’ll have to wait until the Spring to find out.
Twin Peaks (Season 3)
Summer Time (TBC) – Sky Atlantic
More than 25 years after the original classic series left our screens, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks make a return for a third outing to the delight of a massive cult following.
Labeled as one of the most groundbreaking and influential shows ever, the case of murdered homecoming queen Laura Palmer in the quaint but sinister Washington state town continues, with the return of original star Kyle MacLachlan, joined by an impressive cast of Naomi Watts, Amanda Seyfried, Ashley Judd and Laura Dern.
This could easily be the show that everyone talks about this year!
